Executive Speechwriting

Judge the sentiment, move your
audience, make a memorable speech.

A great speech makes a connection between you, and your audience.

Establishing common ground before building on it, and guiding people to a predetermined outcome. Whatever you want people to do, think or feel when you’ve finished speaking, that’s what we’ll focus on, and everything leads to that one, singular goal.

Sometimes facts & statistics are useful,

but too many and you could lose the crowd.

Sometimes a personal story can draw people in,

but you risk it being all about you.

Sometimes a vision of the future can be helpful,

but it needs to be grounded in the present.

And if you’re inspiring people to action, you need to give them something tangible to actually do when you finish. On top of all that you’ve got to make it memorable, give it rhythm, and deliver a speech that’s right for the mood and the moment.

I can help you with all that.

“Barry – it’s brilliant. Well done. The speech takes people on a journey. Honestly, it’s perfect. 👌🏻”

Nicole Thomson-Pride, Ex Prime Ministerial Speechwriter

Sorry to say, the speech is not about you.

I’ve been writing copy for almost three decades, and after making the move to speechwriting I was delighted to find the skills I’d honed over the years were just as relevant. No matter who you are, and what you have to say, the speech is about your audience, not you.

Insight

You need to get inside their heads first of all. What do they feel, know or believe about the subject already?

Empathy

Put yourself in their shoes. How will their position be affected by what you’re planning to say? Defensive? Supported? Engaged?

Relevance

Develop a narrative they can relate to, given the world that they live in and how it affects them.

Clarity

Make your point, but don’t tell people what to think. If you lay it out clearly enough, they’ll find the way on their own.

“Barry’s writing is not only eloquent but strategic—designed to move hearts, shift minds, and inspire action. Barry crafted a keynote speech that was both engaging and deeply aligned with our values – an artful balance of powerful storytelling, request for funds with a perfect dash of humour. His words struck a rare balance of intellect and emotion, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and reinforcing the urgency and hope that underpin our work.”

Maria Sykes, Keynote Speaker, CEO, Jane Goodall Institute Australia

Here’s how we can work together

I write your speech

You’ve got a one-off speech coming up. Whether it’s ten minutes, a keynote or anything in between.

I edit your speech

You’ve got a speech coming up and you’ve already started, but would like a little help to improve and perfect it.

Speechwriting retainer

You’ve got a series of speeches coming up. We’ll establish a partnership where the speeches are always evolving.

Fill out a brief and we’ll talk. I’ll get a sense of who you are, what you want to say and what you want the audience to do afterwards, then I’ll write the speech and send it over to you for review. One round of alterations or changes is usually all that’s required, then we’re done.

“Barry had a real talent for taking my thoughts, notes, and rough ideas and shaping them into a humble, engaging, and inspiring narrative. I’m extremely grateful for his creative input and the care he brought to every draft. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.”
